Toyota has launched its new full-size Tundra pick-up into Australia. Available in the Limited trim variant, the Tundra is priced at $155,990. It’s 5955mm long, 2040mm wide and 1985mm tall, and sits on a 3700mm wheelbase. Under the bonnet is a 3.5-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain teaming the 290kW/649Nm twin-turbo V6 with a 36kW/250Nm motor generator for a whopping output total of 326kW/790Nm.

The powertrain drives through a 10-speed automatic transmission, with power able to be delivered to all four wheels via a part-time selectable 4WD system with a dual-range transfer case. In two-wheel drive mode (2H), drive torque is delivered to the rear wheels, while switching to high range 4WD (4H) via the sliding switch on the centre console engages the front wheels by locking the automatic disconnecting differential (ADD). The Tundra is equipped with low range 4WD (4L). The Tundra sits on the TNGA-F ladder-frame platform that is shared with the LandCruiser 300 Series and new LandCruiser Prado. The frame’s wheelbase has been lengthened by 850mm compared to the LandCruiser 300 Series while the front and rear track of 1737mm is up to 70mm wider. The Tundra’s maximum braked towing capacity of 4500kg.

At the front, there is a double wishbone suspension set-up with the rear suspension comprising a four-link rigid axle configuration with dual-rate coil springs. Stopping power comes via 354mm ventilated discs with 4-piston calipers on the front and 335mm ventilated discs with single-piston calipers on the rear. There is, Toyota says, a full complement of safety technologies including ABS, vehicle stability control, hill-start assist and trailer sway control. Toyota Safety Sense features include the autonomous emergency braking pre-collision safety system, emergency steering assist, active cruise control, lane trace assist and lane departure alert, and automatic high beam.

The Tundra also incorporates blind-spot monitor with cross traffic alert, parking support brake and front and rear parking sensors. It also features a panoramic view monitor and rear-view camera, and a digital rear-view mirror. There’s a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14-inch touchscreen display for the infotainment and multimedia system.
