Hyundai Robotaxi Aces Driver’s Licence Test

Carmakers are continuing the research into fully autonomous driving technology and Hyundai recently unveiled its progress with a new film clip showing an Ioniq 5 robotaxi successfully completing a process similar to an actual U.S. driver’s licence test.

Created to convey the safety and trustworthiness of the IONIQ 5 robotaxi’s autonomous technology, the video features the vehicle completing a series of public-level driving tests, including on the road in Las Vegas.

“I’m a DMV Certified Driving Examiner with 25 years of experience. In that time, I’ve failed thousands and thousands of students in the interest of public safety,” says Kandice Jones, the examiner who tested the IONIQ 5 robotaxi, in the video. “It’s going to be the same criteria – just like testing a human. We’ll be monitoring the speed, lane changes. I’m going to grade maneuvers, making a complete stop, left turns, maintaining the lane, and of course reaction time.”

The robotaxi appears to have excelled, and Hyundai says it ‘is the embodiment of transformative technologies in mobility coming together in one vehicle.’

Fully self-driving vehicles – those that are considered to have achieved Level 5 autonomy – are something of a holy grail. Many carmakers and technology companies are working on improving the systems – hardware and software – that are needed to make achieve it and Hyundai has been working with tech developer Motional on its systems.

“As a company that pursues freedom of mobility, we at Hyundai aim to exhibit the safety and trustworthiness of the IONIQ 5 robotaxi through this campaign,” said Sungwon Jee, Senior Vice President and Global Chief Marketing Officer at Hyundai Motor Company. “We will continue our efforts to communicate our AI-based autonomous driving technology, which is set to provide positive changes to our customers’ everyday lives.”
