Electric Vehicle Council Releases 2023 Industry Recap Report

The Electric Vehicle Council (EVC), the national body representing the electric vehicle industry in Australia and which includes a number of carmakers and distributors amongst its members, released its Australian Electric Vehicle Industry Recap 2023 report in March.

Key findings in The Recap include:

  • EV sales (including both battery EVs and plug-in hybrids) grew by 120 per cent.
  • The total Australian EV fleet surpassed 180,000 electric vehicles.
  • Charging infrastructure locations increased by 75 per cent on the previous year, with 348 locations added across Australia.

The Recap also contains details on the top 20 EV models sold. The report says that 99 different EV models were available in the Australian market – 56 battery electric vehicles (BEV) and 43 Plug-In Hybrids (PHEV). Not surprisingly, Tesla was the best-selling manufacturer of BEVs (46,116 sales), with the Model Y (28,769) and Model 3 (17,347) leading the way. BYD recorded 12,438 sales and together, the two companies accounted for around two-thirds of all new EVs sold in 2023.

While the ACT remains the EV leader in the nation with 20 per cent of all vehicles sold being EVs, Queensland took third spot (behind NSW) with 8.3 per cent of sales being EVs.
