May 2024

In late April, I had the tremendous pleasure of participating in the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) and China Automotive Dealers Association (CADA) Study Tour to the Auto China Show 2024 in Beijing, China. The tour provided a fantastic opportunity to observe the very latest in electric vehicle (EV) technology and products coming out of the world’s largest EV market.

Currently, 60 per cent of global EV sales occur in China, and looking at some of the technology on display, it’s not hard to see why. Brands that we are yet to see in Australia, such as Zeekr, Xiaomi, and Leapmotor, are growing rapidly, bringing innovative new technology and approaches to the industry. It was fascinating to witness the potential future of our industry in real time, and it was an eye-opening reminder that we need to be prepared for a different future.

With the introduction of the Australian Government’s National Vehicle Emissions Standard, it can be expected that we will be seeing a lot more of these EVs manufactured in China hitting our roads.

I encourage members to advance their planning on how to train their workers and invest in the infrastructure and equipment required to service and repair EVs. MTA Queensland is here to help you navigate your path forward, and I remind you all that you can reach out no matter the direction you choose to follow.

It is better to be prepared than the alternative.
