The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) revealed in January the top overall safety performers for 2024. The Toyota Camry, the Mazda CX-80 and Zeekr X emerged as the highest overall safety performers according to ANCAP.

Each of these models achieved a five-star ANCAP safety rating under the 2023-2025 test and rating protocols. Rankings were determined using an overall weighting calculation, with 40 per cent of the score based on Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and 20 per cent each for Child Occupant Protection, Vulnerable Road User Protection, and Safety Assist. The Toyota Camry (Medium Car, hybrid) secured the highest overall weighted ranking of all vehicle models, earning a score of 88.4 per cent.

Following in second place was the Mazda CX-80 (Large SUV, petrol/diesel/PHEV) with an overall weighted score of 87.6 per cent. Rounding out the Top 3, and only marginally behind the CX-80, was all-new brand entrant Zeekr, achieving an overall weighted score of 87.4 per cent for its first arrival, the Zeekr X (Small SUV, electric).

“We saw several new manufacturers enter the market in 2024, and brands like Zeekr have demonstrated their commitment to delivering five-star vehicles to Australian and New Zealand consumers,” said Carla Hoorweg, ANCAP Chief Executive Officer. Of the 23 vehicles rated by ANCAP in 2024, close to half (11 of 23) were new models not previously known to the Australian and New Zealand markets.
