Year-to-date Sales Hit Record High As June Number Wilts

In what has been a bumper year for Australian new vehicle sales, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) has revealed that the June 2024 sales number of 119,659 has seen year-to-date sales stretch to 632,412 – an increase of 8.7 per cent on 2023. It’s also a number that surpasses the previous record of 605,522 set in 2018.

However, that good news was accompanied by the unwelcome result of the June 2024 number declining 4.2 per cent compared to the same month in 2023.

Battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales also slipped in June. According to the FCAI, while BEV sales nabbed 8.8 per cent of the market in June 2023, they fell to 8 per cent of new sales in June 2024. However, the BEV sector was buoyant for the year, accounting for 50,219 sales year-to-date compared to 43,092 at the same time last year.

The June 2024 sales breakdown saw Queensland decrease by 6.3 per cent (26,265) compared to June 2023. NSW was down by 2.1 per cent (36,246), South Australia decreased by 0.5 per cent (7,932), Victoria decreased by 4.7 per cent, Western Australia was down by 7.6 per cent (12,079), and Tasmania decreased by 1.4 per cent (1,897). The ACT were the same as June 2023 (1,856) while the NT fell by 5.3 per cent (1,028).

Toyota was the market leader with sales of 20,903 in June, followed by Ford (9,493), Mazda (9,483), Kia (8,225), and Mitsubishi (7,723).

The Ford Ranger was Australia’s top-selling vehicle with sales of 6,289 in June, followed by the Toyota HiLux (5,630), Toyota RAV4 (3,907), Mitsubishi Outlander (3,045), and Tesla Model Y (2,906).

FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said in a statement that the yearly sales were encouraging, especially considering the ongoing economic challenges.

“The end of the financial year has traditionally been a strong month for vehicle sales and achieving 632,412 sales in just six months is a testament to the resilience of the market,” he said.
